I’m proud to be introducing the 9th Annual Strategic Patient Adherence Awards, the only awards ceremony dedicated to spotlighting excellence and advances in patient adherence. As part of the Patient Adherence and Access Summit (PAAS), June 17-18 in Philadelphia, the SPA Awards highlight the leading initiatives in place today that solve the patient adherence problem and represent role models for their achievements. It has been interesting to watch the evolution of adherence programs, specifically those with a renewed focus on patient engagement, access and education.
“Patient Engagement is the blockbuster drug of the century” – Dr. Farzad Mostashari. Patient engagement is an important piece to the adherence bubble and over my years of being a judge for the Strategic Patient Adherence Awards, I have gotten to see how companies leverage engagement to achieve medication adherence. We have seen nominees take several different approaches to achieving adherence from utilizing technology to in-person counseling sessions and everything in between.
Year after year the judging panel and I have gotten to see breakthroughs in adherence from companies such as Amgen, McKesson and Walgreens. These companies have set the standard and have become leaders in adherence. The SPA Awards is the only platform that not only recognizes their excellence, but gives them the opportunity to share their success with the rest of the industry.
One of the winners that stand out in my mind include a mobile app we all now know as WellDoc. Their ability to combine real time data collection and provide instant feedback/coaching on a mobile platform was an experiment that now has demonstrated lasting results. The SPA awards were created by Center for Business Intelligence to help set the bar for what a leading program in medication adherence looks like. Along the way, the awards raise awareness to innovative approaches to medication adherence.
This year I am excited to be participating again on the SPA judging panel. However, it should be noted that the most important part of the awards is you. Your nominations, submissions and feedback keep the SPA Awards as an honored tradition and a platform to achieve and maintain adherence. Nominations are officially open and we are accepting submissions until May 15th. You can learn more about submitting at the SPA Awards web page.
With the development of new initiatives across the board from pharma, pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, payers and beyond, I am excited to see what this year’s awards season will bring. I hope to see you June 17-18, 2014 in Philadelphia!
